Cherries and Couture at the Downtown Farmers Market

Salt Lake City - The Downtown Farmers Market and Art & Craft Market has had the most successful opening month in its 18-year history with record numbers in sales and attendance. The new and spacious layout has created a less congested feel and made it easier for shopping and enjoying green space in the park. Organizers have seen a 20% increase in vendors and patrons enjoying this downtown summer tradition.

The Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute presents a Farmers Market inspired fashion show on Saturday, July 17 at 11 a.m. Students from the program have created fresh, funky designs that will be worn by McCarty models carrying baskets of produce and baked goods. Vendors from the Art & Craft Market and local downtown clothing stores will also participate; and Bingham Cyclery will provide bikes for the show to complement the day’s theme of “Pedal to the Market”. Bikers who use the secure, free bike valet (hosted by the SLC Bike Collective) will be given a raffle ticket and entered in a contest to win a Specialized commuter bike donated by Bingham Cyclery.

Cherries and apricots have arrived at the market in time for summertime barbeques. Also in season are: assorted greens and lettuce, beets, chard, fresh garlic, peas, radishes, green onions, Spanish onions, turnips, zucchini, yellow squash, carrots and new potatoes.

The 2010 marketplace is open Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 12-Oct. 18 and Tuesday evenings Aug. 3-Oct. 14. The market—with over 250 vendors—offers a unique variety of farmers, growers, bakeries, prepared food and beverages, packaged foods and local artisans.
