Salt Lake Design Week
Design is often considered to be a fairly invisible art, yet it’s omnipresent in people’s lives. According to Molly Mazzolini, Salt Lake Design Week’s co-chairperson, “Design is everywhere in our daily lives. You make many decisions based on design aesthetics, from the outfit you pick out in the morning to your mode of transportation …” What people don’t often realize is that the hard work of design often comes in the very difficult act of beautifully simplifying the complex.
That crux is just one point that Salt Lake City’s first design week is trying to illuminate by gathering practitioners and enthusiasts together from all the various fields in the industry—including graphic, product, fashion, interior and architecture—for open-studio tours, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, receptions and forums to be held throughout the downtown area.
These types of design weeks are becoming more and more popular and prevalent in cities around the globe in an aim to coalesce and benefit local communities. Here in Salt Lake City, a lounge area will be featured at the Leonardo museum, and the lab at the Leo will host hands-on design workshops; design-related films will screen at the Salt Lake City Main Library; the Salt Lake Art Center will host a number of lectures; and there will even be a Shutterstock design competition called “Pixels of Fury.”
“By having over 25 events in the same city during the same week,” adds Mazzolini, “people have access to so many opportunities to be inspired by what our local design community is doing today.” (Jacob Stringer)
