Outdoor Retailer Revisited

Written by Jason Mathis
Every year, downtown hosts thousands of our favorite guests at the Outdoor Retailer Shows. This year’s winter show will be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center, January 19-22, bringing more than 20,000 attendees who will pump $18-20 million into Utah’s economy. That’s a lot of new money. When conventions come to town, they spend money in local businesses and they pay taxes that support schools, build roads and pay the salaries of teachers, police officers and firefighters. Conventions are a good thing for our economy. Other cities also know that conventions are a good thing so competition for conventions…

Sundance Film Festival Sundance Film Festival attracts Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars to Utah each January. The world-famous film festival brings over 50,000 visitors to Park City and Salt Lake City for the best in independent films. Film screenings in downtown SLC will be January 19-29 at Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center and Broadway Centre Cinemas. The festival has shone light on Utah as a hub for filmmakers and filmmaking. Each year the number of made-in-Utah films increases as Utah’s robust film commission makes the Beehive State a cinema destination. Parking Power

Written by Jason Mathis
There is no such thing as a perfect parking system. Urban communities across the world struggle to find room for too many cars trying to squeeze into limited real estate, as commuters, shoppers, diners, visitors and residents all vie for a very limited resource: the humble parking space. In fact, in research recently completed by the Downtown Alliance shows that parking is the number one issue Utahns cite as a deterrent to coming downtown. Compared to many other metropolitan areas, downtown Salt Lake City actually has lots of parking. There are thousands of stalls in garages and surface lots that…
The end of the Downtown Farmers Market—the state’s largest gathering of growers—is almost here, two days remain: Saturday, Oct. 22 and Tuesday, Oct. 25.  The market offers a unique variety of farmers, growers, bakeries, prepared food and beverages, packaged foods and local artisans. “We haven’t had a freeze yet and there is nothing in the forecast, so we are still picking peaches and tomatoes thanks to the cool, wet spring,” said Thayne Tagge of Tagge’s Famous Fruits. “Visit us the next two Saturdays and Tuesdays at the market for some of the best produce of the season.” Bountiful crops are…

Washington DC

Written by Jason Mathis
People like to complain about Washington, DC – sometimes with good reason, but the District of Columbia is more than shorthand for the dysfunction that seems to paralyze politics these days. It is also a dynamic urban center and downtown Salt Lake City has much to learn from the nation’s capital.  Last week 57 Utah business leaders went to the nation’s capital to ask our political leaders to please stop bickering, and get to work solving problems. In two-and-a half days, we met with administration officials, business lobbyists, Utah’s entire congressional delegation and former U.S. Senators Bennett (R- UT) and…
The third season for the Tuesday evening Downtown Harvest Market is open and continues through Oct. 25, 4 p.m. to dusk in historic Pioneer Park. The Tuesday evening market allows commuters who may not visit the capital city on Saturday for the Downtown Farmers Market, downtown residents and regular market shoppers to purchase produce mid-week, supporting community and locally grown and produced food. The smaller size of the mid-week market is an intimate experience and is easy to access for convenient shopping—with ample parking near the park. It is also another outlet for local farmers to sell produce during the…
