2011 Benchmark Report

Perceptions about Salt Lake City’s downtown are changing

The Downtown Alliance has released new polling data that looks at how people across the region feel about their capital city. The data will compare results from 2009 and 2010 studies and indicate new surprising patterns in how people feel about downtown. It measures current levels of interest in, visitation and awareness of downtown SLC, understand primary motivations and barriers to downtown visitation, identify public’s sense of connection with downtown of Downtown Rising, and more.

Highlights of the research include:

Dining remains the most popular reason for visiting downtown, followed by shopping and religious services. Performance arts, sporting events, community events and festivals also ranked high on the list. Young people are more interested in downtown but perceptions about downtown continue to improve.

The telephone poll of 402 Utahns was conducted by Light House Research in coordination with downtown-based Richter 7 who donated services to help direct and compile the research. The poll was conducted in August and September of 2011, and has a 4.89 margin of error. The annual benchmarking poll was initiated in 2009 to measure regional attitudes about Salt Lake City’s downtown.
